RULES & REGULATIONS OF 2024 GRAND METROPOLITAN INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION (ONLINE)
We welcome participants from all over the world to participate in our 2024 Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition (4th Edition - Online)
Categories accepted
Entries: Solo, Duo, Ensemble, concerto categories
Genres: Performance - Classical, Jazz, Pop, Traditional Music
Composition - Must be presented as a performance video, Music Arrangement, Conducting, Music Cover
Instruments: Piano, Strings (violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, ukulele, harp), Woodwind, Brass, Accordion, Harmonical, Voice, Choir, Harpsichord, Organ, Percussion, Traditional Instruments (e.g. Khim, Pipa, Guzheng, Dixi, Guqin, and others).
If you are uncertain whether your instrument would be accepted, please contact us.
Applicants of each category will be placed in the appropriate age group(s) based on level and experience.
No age limit imposed.
The Grand Metropolitan Music Competition (online) comprises TWO ROUNDS
First/Preliminary round
(1) Application: Participants may register for the first round and submit links of their video recordings (on Youtube or Vimeo as public or unlisted links) until 15 March 2024
(2) Late submissions (after 15th March 2024) are subject to a late fee
(3) A list of names of the winners who are successful in the first round and are invited to register to proceed to the second round will be announced on our website on the 18th March 2024.
Second/Final round
(1) Participants who are successful in the first round are required to re-register to proceed to the final round. Entrance into the final round requires active re-registration and submission of fees.
(2) Registration period for final round: 18th March to 28th March 2024
** Note that the final round application form will only be available online on the 28th March 2024
(3) Deadline for application and video submission for the final round is 28th March 2024.
(4) No late applications will be accepted after the 28th March 2024.
(5) Participants are required to re-submit their videos for the final round. They may choose to use the same video they submitted for the first round or submit another video (in form of a YouTube or Vimeo public or unlisted link).
(6) Judging period for the final round will be between 29th March to 7 April, 2024.
(7) Final results will be announced on the 14 April 2024 at 23:59:59 (Eastern Time) for the winners in the final round.

Composition - Must be presented in a performance video
Instruments: Piano, Strings (violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, harp), Woodwind, Brass, Accordion, Harmonica, Voice, Harpsichord, Organ, Percussion (e.g. drums, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, etc), Traditional Instruments (Khim, Guzheng, Dixi, Yang Qin)
FIRST ROUND
(1) Participants are required to submit a public link of a YouTube or Vimeo video recording of their performance. Private links will be not accepted.
(2) One piece of music per application - this refers to one musical work, or one movement of a larger scale work (e.g. a Sonata, concerto, etc). There are no time limits for the musical piece.
(3) Applicants are required to submit a separate application should they wish to submit more than one piece of music, or enter more than one category / instrument / genre.
(4) Incomplete applications or those not including the required documents will not be evaluated.
(5) Full payment of first round must be made before application will be processed. All application fees are non-refundable.
FINAL ROUND
(1) Only successful applicants from the First Round who are admitted to the final round are eligible to apply for the second/final round.
(2) Application form for the final round will be available online on the 18th March 2024.
(3) Applicants are required to re-submit their application for the second round.
(4) A video link must be provided for the final round. The applicant has the choice of resubmitting the video that was used for the first round, or submit a new video. Participants are required to submit a public link of a YouTube or Vimeo video recording of their performance. Private links will be not accepted.
(5) Incomplete applications or not including the required documents will not be evaluated.
(6) Full payment for the final round must be made before application will be processed. All application fees are non-refundable.
If a member of the jury has taught a competitor within the last two years, he/she will abstain from assessing that competitor.
Candidates cannot claim legal rights to recordings and photos submitted or broadcasts that may be made in connection with the competition. All legal rights are reserved by the Canadian International Music Competition and no fee is payable to any competitor for performances, photos, recordings or television broadcasts them.
VIDEO REQUIREMENTS (Same video requirements for both first & final rounds)
(1) An unedited video of the performance forwarded to Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition (Online) as a Youtube or Vimeo PUBLIC LINK. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the video link is openable. Failure to provide a working link could lead to disqualification.
(2) Videos edited in any way to alter the performance will not be accepted.
(3) The video must clearly show the face and hands of the performer.
(4) Please clearly indicate the name of the participant, and name of piece on the Title of the Video
The following format should be used:
On Youtube:
Title (Required): Name of applicant / name of piece
Description: Application for Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition 2024 (indicate first round / final round)
(5) Do not introduce yourself or announce the name of the piece at the beginning of the video.
(6) Make sure that the video is set to PUBLIC on Youtube or Video. Private links on Youtube are not openable and hence will not be accepted. Submission of unopenable links will be disqualified.
(7) Professional quality recording is not mandatory. However, the sound must be clearly audible.
Categories: Participants will be judged based on age and experience (duration of study of their instrument).
Category Divisions (for both Performance and Composition):
Pre-Junior - Ages 6 and under
Junior - Ages 7 to 11
Youth - Ages 12 to 16
Collegiate - Ages 17 - 20 (Music Majors, Conservatory students)
Professional Musician - Ages 21 and above (Performers with professional performance degrees or with comparable performance standards. career musicians)
Amateur Professional - Ages 21 and above (Professionals in other disciplines other than in music, but pursue music seriously outside of one's career. Music performance, teaching or composition is not a primary professional or financial pursuit. May hold a music degree.)
Adult Amateur - Ages 21 and above (non-music majors who play music for enjoyment).
Repertoire requirement: One piece of music that is reflective of the applicant's current level of performance.
Music Scores: Participants are required to submit electronic copies of their scores within 3 days of their application. It is the responsibility for the applicant to submit their scores on time. Grand Metropolitan will not remind applicants about the submission of their scores. Failure to submit scores on time will lead to disqualification. Please do not mail in any physical scores. Format accepted include pdf and image files.

Memorization: Memorization is not mandatory. However, bonus marks will be allocated for performance by memory.
One application per instrument. Candidates are required to make a second application should they wish to play more than one piece of music (same instrument) or to compete in another instrument or genre category.
Candidates who fail to submit their videos before the video submission deadline will be disqualified.
All application fees and late fees submitted are non-refundable.
Judging:
The decision of the jury is final and cannot be appealed.
Multiple awards may be given in each age category.
PRIZES & AWARDS
First/Preliminary Round
Successful participants selected to proceed to the second round will be informed.
Registration is required to participate in the second round.
Participants who are not selected to proceed to the second round will receive a certificate of participation.
Second/Final Round
Medals and certificates of the following categories will be awarded

95% or above Platinum Medal
90% or above Gold Medal
85% and above Silver Medal
80% and above Bronze Medal
Certificates of participation will be awarded
75% and above: Honourable Mention (will only receive certificate)
**Special prizes for top winners - Piano Vertu Prize
** Special Prizes: Engraved trophies will be awarded to Grand Prize Winners with the highest marks in the final round.
** All winners - Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze Winners (inclusive) will be featured as Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition Winners on new media platforms such as FOX, CBS, NBC and other new media.
** Top prize winners will be presented in our online virtual winners' gala concert page on our website.
** Concert portraits and biographies of top winners will be also featured on our website.
** Teachers of winners may receive certificates of recognition by request**.
